Due to the rise in pollution levels globally, various countries have introduced emission regulations for motor vehicles. Due to the same emissions and air pollution at a steep rise in India, all new motor vehicles in India have to pass emission tests. These tests are carried out before the vehicles are registered.
After these tests are done, you need to get the documentation that permits you to drive a vehicle with pollution as it pertains to you. Failing to do so will lead to trouble with the traffic authorities. Moreover, getting the proper documentation for your vehicle is also very important to show that you are a responsible citizen of the country. For this reason, the documentation of your car is linked to your motor insurance. But, before you go ahead and get these documents, you need to know what it is and how it helps you. Motor insurance app would be your best friend to renew your expired policy or to file a claim easily.
Documents required to drive in India
As per the Motor Vehicles Act, 2019, any individual that drives any type of motor vehicle on the roads will have to procure a set of documents when asked for by a traffic police officer in uniform. This set of documents include:
- A valid insurance policy
- Registration certificate
- PUC certificate
- Driving license
- Transport permit in the case of transport vehicles
Out of these, it is the PUC certificate that the police officer will check in regard to emissions.
What is a PUC certificate?
PUC certificate is a document certificate that shows that the emission levels of a vehicle meet the pollution control standards. These pollution controls standards are set so that the level of pollution in a given area can be controlled. Once it is under control, measures can be taken to reduce it.
A vehicle’s emission certificate is issued after it has successfully passed the Public Utilities Commission test. This ensures that the vehicle’s emissions are in line with the standards. The pollution standards/emission levels are fixed for every type of vehicle in the country. Hence, it is not hard to know how much your vehicle’s pollution levels should be. However, the test is only valid when carried out by an authorized person. Every time you need to get a PUC certificate, you can go to the nearest authorized PUC center and get the test done in a matter of minutes. This is important because it is mandatory for vehicles to carry a PUC certificate.
Is a PUC certificate necessary for motor insurance?
Before buying motor insurance, all customers need to have a valid PUC. While this does add complexity to the process and increase the documentation requirements for the insurance transaction, it is necessary. The same goes for renewal of the policy.
Every time any person is driving a vehicle, they can be stopped by traffic authorities at random. In this situation, a PUC certificate is required to prove that their vehicle is in compliance with the set pollution standards. If they do not present this document, they will have to pay a fine and can also face more troubles with the authorities. However, if a person has an existing motor insurance policy and is making a claim, then the claim cannot be denied if they do not have a valid PUC certificate.
There is a simple reason for why the PUC test is necessary for buying insurance. The reason is that the government does not approve of insurers selling to vehicle owners that do not follow traffic norms. Such individuals are likely to cause pollution and a lot more issues on the road. And, the biggest reason for having PUC is that is ensures the vehicle is heathy and does not cause harm to the environment.
Due to the rise in pollution, the government has made the use of Public Utilities Commission mandatory. This was one of the best solutions to control it. Drivers not paying attention to what they’re doing with and to their car can also result in a lot of pollution. For example, burning fuel in the wrong way can generate emissions.
